Making a website mobile-friendly

Typically when we think of a website being "mobile-friendly", we think responsive design, which involves adding "breakpoints" or layout versions for given widths into the site – essentially changing the layout of the site once the device is detected to be a certain size. Layout elements also use percents instead of fixed widths and heights to conform to the size of any screen.

To make a website mobile-friendly it is usually more effective to "start over" and choose a responsive design template, and then build customizations on top of that to re-integrate the look and feel of your site. To refactor an existing site to make it responsive would typically take more time and be more costly.
